Job Description
Visa is seeking a senior attorney to lead legal support for Visa’s business operations in Central America and the Caribbean (CARCAM). The position is based in Panama City, Panama, and reports to the SVP, Chief Counsel for Latin America and Caribbean based in San Francisco, California and to the CARCAM Group Manager based in Miami, Florida.
Responsibilities:
- Primary legal support to the CARCAM Group Manager and his leadership team. Develop solutions and guide the team along the path to implementation by performing a structured legal analysis for each problem presented, proactively identifying and escalating key roadblocks to stakeholders early in the process, and applying sophisticated strategies and creative approaches to achieving satisfactory negotiated outcomes.
- Leverage a deep knowledge of the CARCAM geographic markets, familiarity with local electronic payment systems environment, expertise in relevant areas of the law, including electronic payments, antitrust, privacy, intellectual property, antibribery, and employment, and understanding of Visa’s business to generate practical and business-focused legal advice.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, such as client incentive agreements, sponsorship, advertising, and promotion agreements, memoranda of understanding, technology agreements, consultancy and contractor agreements, and confidentiality agreements. This also includes development of template/standard documents or adapting U.S. documents to meet local requirements.
- Determine when external legal support is required and manage outside counsel efficiently cost effectively.
This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in the office will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- 15 years of relevant experience.
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
- Current member in good standing of a State Bar with the ability to become barred or a registered in-house counsel in the state where this role is located.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Law degree and admitted to practice.
- 15+ years of commercial, regulatory, and international legal experience in large law firms and/or in-house with multinationals.
- Experience in the payments / fintech industry.
- Ideally, experience working with financial and competition regulators.
- Knowledge of U.S. or common law would be ideal.
- Excellent legal analytical skills with the ability to untangle and analyze complex legal issues and to integrate legal advice and business knowledge, while providing balanced, strategic advice regarding risks and benefits.
- First-class written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English, including ability to (i) lead or participate in conference calls to negotiate in both languages and (ii) interact with internal and external parties with clarity, conviction, and firmness.
- Ability to be a strategic sounding board to the leadership team to test ideas, identify risks, and assess strategic changes that could have wide-ranging legal or business implications.
- Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to build strong working relationships with internal clients at all levels of management and work collaboratively with LAC regional and global teams to ensure effective management within matrix organization over multiple geographical locations.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- Some international travel may be required.
